Great British Super Heavyweight Olympic boxing gold medallist Anthony Joshua has been inundated with big money offers to turn professional but he insists that he will stay amateur. Anthony claims that he has yet to achieve all he can as an amateur and is even thinking about the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
Joshua told BBC News, “Yes, Rio [the host city of the 2016 Games] is there, but I'm taking it fight by fight at the moment. If I don't perform, well, you know how hard the qualifying is. I've got to take it step by step. But if I go to Rio, I'm going with pure ambition, because being able to take what I learned in London would be unbelievable.”
He added, “At the time, London was more like a national championship, because everything happened so quickly. It was like I had won four more fights and then it was the end of the season. It's only now that I've had time to reflect on it. Rio would be crazy, but I've got to get there first.”
Anthony Joshua admitted that he wants to at least stay amateur for at least another year, as he bids to win the World Championships next year. Anthony won silver at the last World Championships, missing out on the gold medal by just one point.
Do you think Anthony Joshua is right to stay amateur or should he turn pro now?
